diabetes
renal insufficiency
chronic lung disease
malnutrition - longer hospitalization
- increasing age
- more invasive procedures
- excessive or imporper use of broad spectrum antibiotics
some hospital aquired infections include
sepsis, pneumonia, urinary tract infections, surgical wound infections, nosocomial diarrhoea
organisms that lead to sepsis in most cases
coagulase negative staphylococci, fungi eg candida albicans
organisms that lead to pneumonia
staphylococcus aureus, e.coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, enterobacter species, klebsiella pneumoniae
organisms that lead to surgical wound infections
enterococcus species, e.coli, pseudomonas aeruginosa, enterobacter species, and other gram negative bacteria
organism that causes nosocomial diarrhoae
clostridium difficile
organism that causes urinary tract infections
candida albicans and some gram negative bacteria
