Human microbiome Flashcards
explain concepts of taxonomic and genetic diversity
Taxonomic diversity refers to the diverse population of bacterial species making up the microbiome. It is great due to large varity of bacteria.
Genetic microbiome rfers to the number of unique protein encoding genes in the microbiome. It is generally low in healty individuals
concept of core microbiome
individual species of bacteria present in most indivudals on specific body sites. It usually consists of a small number of species but rperesnets a large part of the population
staphylococcus epidermidis
gram positive cocci found on conjuctiva, skin, nasopharynx
diphteroids info and location on body
gram positive bacterium rods (bacilli) found on the skin
Propionibacterium spp. info and location
gram positive bacilli found on the skin
viridans streptococci info and location
gram positive cocci found in mouth and oropharynx and nasopharynx
Staphylococcus aureus info and location
gram positive cocci found in the nasopharynx
Lactobacillus spp. info and location
rod shaped gram positive, facultative anaerobic, found in colon, external genitalia, anterior urethra, and vagina. It maintains a low pH of around 5, at which yeast cannot grow.
colon flora
anaerobes, coliforms, peptostreptococci, enterococci, yeast, lactobacillus spp
external genitalia and urethrea flora
lactobacillus spp, skin flora, anaerobes
mouth and oropharynx flora
viridans streptococci, non pathogenic Neisseria spp, anaerobes and yeast.
term for disruption of normal microflora
dysbiosis
