Nose/Ear/Mastication Flashcards
Sinusitis
Inflammation of 1+ paranasal sinus
Anosmia
Loss of smell due to shearing of olfactory nerves
Epstaxis
Nosebleed
Kiesselback’s area is frequent site
Nose Arteries
Anterior ethmoid
Sphenopalatine
Greater palatine
Superior labial arteries
Paranasal Sinuses
Frontal
Ethmoidal
Maxillary
Sphenoidal
Frontal & Maxillary Referred Pain
Tapping on bone superficial to sinus will cause pain
Sphenoid Referred Pain
Pain to the top of head
Ethmoid Referred Pain
Pain lateral to eyes
External Ear
Pinna
Ear canal
Tympanic membrane
Middle Ear
Ossicles (MIS)
Eustachian tube (transmits vibration in air to fluid)
Tensor tympani (CN V3)
Stapedius (CN VII - limits transfer of energy during loud sounds)
Inner Ear
Vestibulocochlear organs interpret vibrations as nerve impulses & sends to brain
Bruised Ear (Cauliflower)
Hematoma between cartilage & perichondrium (cartilage will die and reduce size causing deformity)
Ear Drum/Tympanic Membrane
Cone-shaped to capture sound
Myringotomy
Incisions in eardrum for tubes through membrane
Cholesteatoma
Excess invagination of tympanic membrane leading to benign accumulation of dead squamous cells trapped in middle ear
Destroy middle ear by compression
