what is the triad for normal pressure hydrocephalus
gait disturbance
incontinence of urine
memory loss
MRI- ventricular enlargement and increased signal intensity around ventricles (increased CSF production)
treatment: LP and therapeutic drainage of CSF. test the mental status pre and post (3hr) LP
CSF catheter or shunt to facilitate drainage
Pick’s disease
socially inappropriate and agressive disinhibition echolalia (echo what is said to them) anxiety emotional disturbances obsessive and repetitive behaviour incontinence inappropriate jocularity
diagnosis: brain imaging CT/MRI reveals frontotemporal lobe degeneration. Build up of Pick’s bodies (spherical aggregations of tau proteins which accumulate in the neutrons)
management: appropriate support / carers/ accommodation
Shy-Drager syndrome
autonomic dysfunction
ataxia
Parkinsonism
‘multiple system atrophy’
Creutzfeldt-Jakob syndrome
rare
dementia and hallucinations
no personality changes
