Describe bacterial vaginosis. (2)
Commonly caused by Gardnerella vaginalis or another anaerobe, which disrupts pH balance of the vagina.
Describe the risk factors for bacterial vaginosis. (1)
Any practices that disrupt normal vaginal flora eg soaps, douching.
Describe the presentation of bacterial vaginosis. (1)
Presents often as vaginal discharge only.
Describe the diagnosis of BV. (1)
High vaginal swab.
Describe the treatment of BV. (1)
Metronidazole.
Describe thrush. (2)
Vulvovaginal candidiasis is commonly caused by Candida albicans.
Describe risk factors for thrush. (4)
Immunosuppresion (pregnancy, HIV, diabetes), antibiotics, COCP.
Describe symptoms of thrush (4)
White, non-offensive vaginal discharge with pruritis, pain or dyspareuria.
Describe diagnosis of thrush. (1)
High vaginal swabs.
Describe the treatment of thrush. (1)
Oral or topical azoles.
