Define FGM (3)
All procedures involving the removal of external female genitalia or other injury to femal genitalia for non-therapeutic reasons (includes piercing).
Describe the 4 types of FGM. (4)
1 - partial or total removal of the clitoris
2 - partial or total removal of the clitoris, labia minors and labia majora.
3 - narrowing of the vaginal oriface by cutting and repositioning the labia, then stitching them together.
4 - all other harmful procedures eg pricking, cutting, cauterising, piercing.
Where is FGM common? (2)
African countries - Somalia, Guinea, Djibouti, Egypt.
Anywhere where peoples from these countries have migrated.
Describe some acute consequences of FGM. (5)
Haemorrhage, sepsis, HIV, hepatitis, death.
Describe some chronic consequences of FGM (5)
Difficulties with sex/childbirth, chronic pain, obstructive dysmenorrhea, urinary outflow obstruction, PTSD.
Describe the laws that surround FGM in Britain. (4)
Illegal in the UK - 14 year jail sentence.
Report any under 18s who have it or who are at risk.
Refer and advise any over 18s
Also illegal to close back to previous appearance after an episiotomy even if the woman requests it.
