why are non communicable diseases more common in developed countries?
people with higher income can buy high fat food
why are incidences of cardiovascular disease, obesity and type 2 diabeties more common in deprived areas?
people there are more likely to smoke, have a bad diet and not exercise
what does smoking increase risk of?
•cvd, lung disease and lung cancer
•smoking when pregnant can increase risk of health problems for unborn baby
what does drinking too much increase risk of?
•liver disease
•can affect brain function as it damages nerve cells in the brain causing it to lose volume
what are things that cause cancer known as?
carcinogens
what can exposure to ionising or UV radiation increase risk of?
cancer
why do risk factors not always count as causes of diseases?
risk factors are identified from correlations in data which do not always equal causes e.g. a lack of exercise and high fat diet are linked to increases risk of cvd but are not direct causes as it is the resulting of high bad cholesterol levels that actually cause it
how can non communicable diseases be costly?
•NHS have to spend money on reaserching and treating these diseases
•families may have to move or adapt their home to help a family member with disease which can be expensive
•a patient may have to give up work or could die reducing family income
•a reduced number of people at work due to illness may affect the country’s economy
give an example of a risk factor other than an aspect of a person’s life style?
the environment- being around air pollution too much
