NMR Flashcards
Why do we use proton and carbon 13
Their atomic radius is odd
So it has a nuclear spin which creates a weak magnetic field
How can an atom be in the same environment
Bonded to an atom or groups of atoms that are identical
What chemical is used as a standard in carbon NMR
Têtramethylsilane
Why do use TMS
Produce a large single peak
Inert
Non toxic
Volatile (easy to remove)
What is chemical shift
Difference between TMS peak and the peak produced by the substance
What chemical do we use in hydrogen NMR
Anything with Detrium D2O, or chloroform-d
Which is known as deuterium has an even number of nucleons so it won’t be detected.
We also use it because we can’t use hydrogen-based solvents as it would interfere with the spectra
