What is the physiology of hypoxia?
The foetus will attempt breathing movements and lack O2, neural centres lose function, absent resp effort, lactic acid is released, circulation to non vital organs ceased
what is the stage of absent resp effort called?
primary apnoea
What is the most important requirement for hypoxic infants?
lungs be aerated effectively
What should be done at birth?
Stimulation and warmth with towel/heater
How do we assess the baby?
colour, tone, breathing, HR
Airway?
open away, jaw thrust, neutral position
Breathing?
Inflation breaths - 30cm for 2-3 seconds x 5
iGel inflation breaths
Ventilation breaths once chest moving - 1-2 sec for 30 sec
Chest comps - 90 comps and 30 breaths in one min
what can we do if nothing is working?
venous access - Sodium Bicarbonate, Adrenaline,
Dextrose (BAD)
feral blood - o neg or NACL, Naloxone
