Nitrous II Flashcards
Regulatory issue with nitrous tank storage.
Must be attached to the wall so it doesn’t fall over and go flying like a missile.
Tank color for nitrous.
Blue
Tank color for oxygen.
Green
A safety features of nitrous delivery systems.
- Pin Index Safety System
- Diameter Index Safety System
- Thread Index Safety System
- Oxygen Fail Safe
Safety feature in which nitrous can’t flow unless oxygen is also flowing.
Oxygen Fail Safe
What do we need to be cautious about with the pressure reduction valves on the tanks?
That there’s no oil or grease on the valve to support combustion.
The pressure reduction valve generates this.
Friction, and heat.
Quirky thing about the pressure valve on a nitrous tank.
It always shows it’s full until it’s empty.
Types of flow meters in a nitrous tank.
Demand or Continuous Flow
Never allow this to happen to the reservoir bag.
Overinflate or Collapse
Size of adult reservoir bag.
3 L
Size of child reservoir bag.
1 L
The piece of the nitrous delivery system that goes over the nose.
Nasal hood.
Used to disinfect the nasal hood.
Glutaraldehyde
Precautions with Nitrous
- Hypoxia risk
- Loss of consciousness
- Nausea/Emesis/Aspiration risk
- Bronchospasm
- Fire/explosion
- Risk management
- Infection control
Percentage of Nitrous given to prevent diffusion hypoxia.
Less than or equal to 50%.
Causes of Nitrous-Induced Hypoxia
1) Miscalibrated flowmeters
2) Nitrous concentration over 80%.
3) Hypoventilation
4) Diffusion Hypoxia
Treatment for DIffusion Hypoxia
-Discontinue the nitrous and increase oxygen flow to 100%.
T/F:
30-35% Nitrous may cause some people to lose consciousness.
True
The risk of this increases with increasing time and/or concentration of nitrous.
Emesis (vomiting).
Increased risk for emesis and aspiration after being on what % nitrous, and for how long?
> 30 minutes at >50% nitrous
Time period to prevent nitrous emesis.
<30 minutes of exposure
Concentration of nitrous that prevents emesis.
<50%
Nitrous is not ________, but it will support combustion.
flammable
