Nitrogen, Sulphur & Phosphorus Organic Compounds Flashcards
1
Q
What are the levels to amine classification?
A
- primary amine: one alkyl/aryl group bonded to nitrogen and 2 hydrogens
- secondary amine: two alkyl/aryl groups bonded to nitrogen and 1 hydrogen
- tertiary amine: three alkyl/aryl groups bonded to nitrogen
- quaternary amine: four alkyl/aryl groups bonded to nitrogen (charged +1)

Q
What factors affect basicity of amines?
A
Increasing the number of alkyl group, the basicity of the amine increases
(secondary > primary > ammonia).
However, tertiary amine less basic because of the poor solubility of the protonated amine that would be formed
