Nichols Monday Flashcards
Why does lead create basophilic stippling in RBCs?
inhibition of pyrimidine 5’ nucleotidase
the stippling is leftover rRNA that should have been cleared before RBC entered the bloodstream
Why does lead cause neurotoxicity?
divalent competition w/ Calcium
thought to compete w/ calcium in mitochondrial respiration and various nerve functions (and including activation of protein kinase C)
What cytokines are released by smoking that recruit neutrophils into the lungs?
LTB4, IL-8, TNF
How does smoking predispose to coronary artery disease?
1) injury of endothelial cells (increased permeability of lipid into arteries)
2) induce procoagulant state
3) increase HR, BP, contractility
4) decrease blood oxygen carrying capacity (due to CO in cigarettes)
Smoking is implicated in how many heart attacks?
1/3
