Describe the history of the NHS
1948 created 3 core principles: universal, comprehensive, free at point of delivery
Describe the health and social care act
2012- give power to primary care by making them commissioners, changed NHS structure, allowed NHS staff to set up own care organisations
Who has overall accountability for NHS?
Secretary of State for Health
What does DoH do?
Sets national standards, shapes direction of NHS and social care services, sets fees for services
What could be the future of the NHS?
Pressures of ageing population, technology and finances
Private sectors mean loss of money and training
More managerial roles for doctors
High Quality Care for All 2008 said all doctors and nurses should be partners and leaders
What are the different type of management roles?
Medical director Clinical director Consultant GPs Chief Executive
What does a medical director do?
Only one of them. On board of directors and represents medical staff at management level, lead staff, approve job descriptions
What does a clinical director do?
Many of them. Manage a speciality to provide training, implement audits, induction of new doctors, quality improvement, supervise junior doctors
What management skills must you have?
Strategic, financial, operational, human resources, communication, know where responsibility lies, systems to help teamwork
What are some issues with management?
Hostile relationships between managers and clinicians
Implications for safety and quality of care
Hard to impose authority and challenge power
