Social and historical process that means occupation becomes a profession by asserting exclusive claim over knowledge or skills
Why is professional self regulation good?
Interests of profession seen as best guarantee of interests of public
Professionals should be trusted without regulation

What is socialisation?
Individuals internalise and cooperate with norms and meet standards
Facts, values and attitudes
Like how children develop social values
Formal (facts) and informal (attitudes) interactions with others
What could go wrong with self regulation?
Promote a self-deceiving vision of objectivity and reliability of its knowledge and virtues of its members
Discouraged from raising concerns about each other
Sanctioning costs are high
Credibility gap-psychiatric patients not believed
