A
- control and regulate the environment of its sport
- administer the practice and participation of its sport
- develop its sport
- influence both its members and organisations of which it is a member like international bodies

why did NGBs start to get formed
A
- sport was becoming increasingly popular with more widespread playing of sport
- more teams and clubs were forming
- more national and international fixtures were being organised
- nationally agreed rules needed to be codified
- maintenance of the amateur ideal to deal with professionalism and early commercialisation

why would some sports prevent professionals from competing in their sport
A
- due to the desire of the upper/middle class
- to preserve amateur ideals in sport
- to maintain exclusivity
- they did not like losing working class professionals
