Newton's laws of motion Flashcards
What is Newton’s first law of motion?
Newton’s first law of motion states the velocity of an object will not change unless a resultant force acts on it.
What is Newton’s second law?
The rate of change of momentum of an object is directly proportional to the resultant force which acts on the object.
What is the equation for Newtons second law?
F = mv/t
If mass is constant how can Newton’s 2nd law be expressed in an equation?
resultant force (F) = mass(m) x acceleration (a)
What is Newton’s 3rd law?
If an object A exerts a force on object B, then object B exerts an equal but opposite force on object A.
Why does the equal and opposite forces of gravity acting on a book against the table pushing back not show Newton’s 3rd law?
For Newtons third law the pair of forces acting have to be of the same type. Therefore a book resting on a table is an example of Newton’s first law.
