The process of collecting a few drops of blood from the newborn onto an appropriate collection card and performing biochemical testing for determining if the newborn has a heritable condition (conditions result to mental retardation, physical deformity, and death).
Newborn Screening
A simple, non-invasive procedure to find-out if a baby has a congenital metabolic disorder that may lead to mental retardation and or death if left untreated. Newborn screening tests are done by measuring metabolites and enzyme activity in whole blood samples collected on specialized filter paper.

Follow-up
