Developed Functionalist ideas about meritocracy. Sees inequality as positive because economic growth has raised the standards of living for everyone. Inequality has positive effects as it encourages harder work! Capitalist societies offer incentives e.g. High salaries to those who are hard working, talented and enterprising. Computers and iPods wouldn’t exist if people weren’t motivated to design and produce them. ‘Consumption Cleavages’ - Gap between those that can afford private services and those who rely on the state services.

suggests that black youths are more likely to be in single parent families. (lack of positive role models) Young black Afro Caribbean males follow the ‘hyper masculine’ role models often shown in rap music videos on MTV. This helps them to create a ‘Gangsta’ identity where they achieve status amongst their peer group for wearing the right designer clothes and trainers, through being aggressive and through not working hard at school.
