धीवराणाम् नृपम् गत्वा शान्तनुः वदति स्म ।
Having gone to the king of the fishermen, Śāntanu spoke.
तव कन्याम् विवाहे इच्छामि इति ।
“I desire your daughter in marriage.”
धीवराणाम् नृपः प्रतिवदति स्म यदि सत्यवती तव भार्या भविष्यति तर्हि तस्याः पुत्रः नृपः भविष्यति इति ।
The king of the fishermen replied, “If Satyavatī will become your wife then her son will become king.”
शान्तनुः राजगृहम् दुःखेन पुनः अगच्छत् ।
Śāntanu unhappily went again to the palace.
भीष्मः सर्वम् श्रुत्वा धीवराणाम् नृपम् गत्वा तम् वदति स्म ।
Having heard all, Bhīṣma went to the king of the fishermen and said to him:
पुरा शान्तनुः माम् अवदत् हे भीष्म त्वम् नृपः भविष्यसि इति ।
“Long ago Śāntanu said to me, ‘O Bhīṣma you will become king.’”
इदानीम् तु सत्यवत्याः पुत्रः नृपः भविष्यति ।
“However, now Satyavatī’s son will become king.”
अहम् नृपः न भविष्यामि इति मम व्रतम् इति ।
“I will not become king. Thus is my vow.”
शान्तनुः सत्यवतीम् परिणयति स्म ॥
Śāntanu married Satyavatī.
