NEW DIRECTIONS Flashcards
What can you infer from paragraph one :
“In 1903 the late Mrs. Annie Johnson of Arkansas found herself with two toddling sons, very little money, a light ability to read and add simple numbers. To this picture add a disastrous marriage and the burdensome fact that Mrs. Johnson was a Negro.”
She had little education, going threw a difficult time of her life, and didn’t feel very comfortable in the color she was in
How did Mr. Johnson react to the way that Mrs. Johnson told him that she wants a divorce? (paragraph 2)
he thought the same as her
what did Mr. Johnson get? (out of their divorce)
he was able to practice a religion (preacher) and took most of their money.
What was something Mr. Johnson was planning on doing?
he was planning on leaving and study religion in Enid Oklahoma where he knew someone who he could marry, a minister’s daughter.
What character traits is Annie according to paragraph 3:
“She would not go to work as a domestic and leave her ‘precious babes’ to anyone else’s care”
she is independent and protective
What did it mean when Annie decides she wants to “walk her own path”
she wants to be free and create something herself, without anyone to tell her what to do.
In what paragraph do we know that Annie wants to hide her plans for now?
paragraph 4
What can you infer :
“she placed stones in two five-gallon pails and carried them three miles to the cotton gin. she rested a little, and then, discarding some rocks, she walked in the darkness to the saw mill five miles farther along the dirt road.”
she prepares well, works hard, does everything herself/independent, and good at planning
What can yo infer in paragraph 5?
“that same night she worked into the early hours boiling chicken and frying ham. she made dough and filled the rolled-out pastry with meat. at last she went to sleep.”
Mostly the same as paragraphs 3-4, it explains that she is disciplined and loves her children very much after all, part of why she is doing this is because she needs more money to take care of her and her children
What can you infer :
The aroma rose and floated over to the workers who spilled out of the gin, covered with white ling, looking like specters.
It was a well though out plan of where she placed her stall
where did her stall start out at
in an empty lot behind the cotton gin
what can you infer :
“most workers had brought their lunches of pinto beans and biscuits or crackers, onions and cans of sardines, but they were tempted by the hot meat pies”
even though they brought their own lunch, the strong aroma was tempting them and wanting to buy annie’s pies
why did she carry the rocks? What part of the text did you get this from?
so that she could carry everything out of her house to put at her stall. paragraph 6, “the net morning she left her house carrying the meat pies, lard, an iron, brazier, and coals for a fire”
in paragraph 8 it states that she would sell hot pies and cold pies, what can we infer from this?
She alternates between them, thinking through her plans to figure out smarter ways to sell
in paragraph 9, what part of it helps explain that she is a hard worker and makes precise plans (don’t have to memorise it all, just the important parts of it)
“for the next few years, on balmy spring days, blistering summer noon, and cold wet, and wintry mid days, Annie never disappointed her customers, who could count on seeing the tall, brown-skin woman bent over her brazier carefully turning the meat pies.”
