neutrophils Flashcards
what are the different functions of neutrophils
phagocytosis, degranulation and NETs
describe the neutrophil process of phagocytosis
pathogen releases chemical signals that attract neutrophils, neutrophils use PRRs to bind to and phagocytose
describe the neutrophil process of degranulation
this is the release of anti-bacterial proteins from neutrophil granules into extracellular fluid, killing extracellular pathogens(bacteria and fungi), could cause tissue damage and (possibly)systemic inflammation
describe the neutrophil process of NETs
NETs = Neutrophil Extracellular Traps
cell commits suicide in order to trap and kill pathogen, NETs are composed of the cells DNA, histones, enzymes and granular proteins
what type of cell are NK(natural killer) cells
lymphocytes
what cells do NK cells target and kill
specifically infected or abnormal(cancerous) cells
how do they kill other cells
they release cytotoxins that cause the cell to undergo apoptosis
