basics of immune system Flashcards
what does the immune system do
it identifies and eliminates microorganisms and other harmful substances as well as abnormal cancer cells
what are the different ways in which the immune system is able to carry out its function
it can distinguish between ‘self’ and foreign molecules, it can identify ‘danger’ signals
what are the different ways in which the immune system can be manipulated
immunisation, anti-inflammatory and immunosuppressive drugs, cancer immune therapy
describe what is meant by the term innate(natural) immunity
innate immunity is present constantly, these are defense mechanisms that have been present since birth and is generally non-specific
describe what is meant by acquired(adaptive) immunity
acquired immunity is not always present, it is induced by the presence if foreign/non-self molecules, this response is usually a specific one
