lymphocytes, antigens and antibodies Flashcards
what are the 2 types of lymphocytes
T cells and B cells
where do B cells mature and what are they involved in
mature in bone marrow
responsible for humoral(body fluids) immune response, produce antibodies
key role in defense against pathogens
where do T cells mature and what are they involved in
mature in thymus
responsible for cellular immune responses
key role in defence against intracellular pathogens
describe what an antigen is and what an antibody is
antibody = proteins produced in response to and that bind to antigens, each antibody has unique variable region that binds to specific antigen antigen = any substance that can cause adaptive immune response, by activating B and T cells
describe the relationship between B, antibodies and antigens
B cells use membrane-bound antibodies to recognise and bind to antigens
how do B and T cells make the adaptive immune response is specific
individual B and T cells express only one type of antigen receptor on surface, so can only target one specific pathogen
where do antigen-specific B and T cells develop
primary lymphoid tissues, bone marrow and spleen
