Neurotransmitters Flashcards
Acetylcholine
Acetylcholine: mostly excitatory but inhibitory neuromuscular synapses at heart. Activates all voluntary muscles
Cns: throughout brain
Pns: neuromuscular junctions (voluntary muscles) sympathie nervous system, oarasymlathy
Excitatory at neuromuscular junctions
Inhibitory between the vagus nerve and cardiac muscle
Norepinephrine
Excititory: attention/consciousness, temperature control and pituitary gland secretion
found in brain, spinal cord, neuromuscular and neurglandar junctions of the sympathic nervous system
Dopamine
Excitatory (amplified by cocaine) and inhibitory (involved in precise movement control)
found in hypothalamus, midlebrain, limbic system, cerebral cortex, retina
Sérotonine
Excitatory and inhibitory
Attention and emotional states
Selective sérotonine récup take inhibitors (SSRI)
Ecstasy
People with depression have a problem here, either too little or a resistance
found in hypothalamus, cerebellum, spinal cord, retina
GABA
inhibitory: anti anxiety effects
found in cerebral cortex, cerebellum, interneurons in spinal cord
Glutamate
main neurotransmitter Excitatory: memory and learning
cerebral cortex brainstem
