Neuropathaties Flashcards
What is a mononeuropathy?
Lesion/damage restricted to a single peripheral nerve
Which nerves are commonly affected in a mononeuropathy
Ulnar
Radial
Median
Common peroneal
What is carpal tunnel syndrome?
Compression of the median nerve in the carpal tunnel
In which conditions does carpal tunnel commonly occur?
Pregnancy Hypothyroid Acromegaly Rh Art Diabetes
How does carpal tunnel present?
Pain and tingling in the hand worse at night
Weakness of thumb abduction
Thenar muscle wasting
Which two tests can be used to test for carpal tunnel syndrome?
Phalen’s
Tinel’s
How can carpal tunnel syndrome be investigated?
Nerve conduction studies
How is carpal tunnel syndrome managed?
Splinting
Steroid injections
Surgical decompression
What is mononeuritis multiplex?
Damage to two or more peripheral nerves (which are usually not related)
What conditions are associated with mononeuritis multiplex?
Diabetes mellitus
SLE
Rh arthritis
Vasculitis
How is mononeuritis multiplex investigated?
Nerve conduction studies
Which axons are normally affected first by polyneuropathies?
Longer axons
What is the typical pattern of peripheral neuropathy?
Glove and stocking
How does peripheral neuropathy tend to start and then progress?
Starts peripherally and moves more proximally
Legs affected before arms
What is Guillain-Barre syndrome?
Rapidly progressive, ascending polyneuropathy
