Neurons Flashcards
1
Q
What are nerones?
A
nerve cells specialisted to move electrical impulses to and from the CNS
2
Q
What makes up the structure of the neuron?
A
- the cell body ( stoma)
- nucleus
- dendron
- axon
- axon terminal
- nodes of ravier
3
Q
What are dendrons and their function?
A
- they are branch like structures that some off the cell body
- it carries nerve impulses towards the cell body
4
Q
What is the node of ranvier and it’s function?
A
- gaps that separate mylein sheath
- makes sure the myelin sheath isn’t continuous as it could slow down electrical impulses
- it does this by making the impulses jump along the axon
5
Q
What are axons and their function?
A
- they are single long fibres
- they carry nerve impulses away from the cell body
6
Q
What is the stoma?
A
- the cell body, which contains the nucleus
- and is the control centre of a neuron
6
Q
What is the myelin sheath and their function?
A
- they are an insulated membrane of the cells that make up the axon (schwann cells)
- they allow impulses to be transmitted faster along the axon
7
Q
What are the types of neurons?
A
- sensory
- motor
- relay
