neuron structure Flashcards
dendrites
the bushy spine of the neuron that receives messages
cell body
messages are sent for processing
axon
the long strand like part of the neuron that conducts electrical impulses away from the cell body to the sending end of the neuron
myelin sheath
a white fatty covering that helps insulate the axon of one neuron from the others
axon terminal
each terminal contains terminal button which contain neurotransmitters
glial cells
provide insulation and nutrients, aid in repairing and eliminating waste, neurons can not function without glial cells
sensory neurons - afferent
Sends messages from the sense organs and sense receptors sites to the brain via the spinal cord
motor neurons - efferent
Carries messages away from the central nervous system towards the muscle, organs ands glands
interneurons
Nerve cells found only in the CNS and act as a a link between sensory and motor neurons
