Neuromuscular system Flashcards
Name the type of joint found in the skull
Fibrous joint
Give the function of the neuromuscular system
Support and locomotion
Describe the spinal column
Series of small bones forming a flexible and supportive structure down the back
What is the function of the cartilage discs in the spinal column?
Found between the vertebrae to cushion them during locomotion
Give an example of a cartilaginous joint
Intervertebral discs holding the vertebrae together
Give an example of a synovial joint
Knee
What is the function of the ligaments in a synovial joint?
Strong fibrous tissues that joins the bones together
What is the function of the tendons in a synovial joint?
Join the muscle to the bone
What is the function of the synovial fluid in a joint?
Reduces friction at a joint and acts as a shock absorber
What is the function of the cartilage in a synovial join?
Prevents the bone rubbing together. Smooth surface allowing bones to glide over each other
Muscles always come in pairs. What is the name of these pairs?
Antagonistic pairs.
Name the process which causes muscle contraction
Sliding filament theory
Name the two type of filament present in a muscle cell that slide over each other
Thick and thin filaments
What is the function of the synovial membrane?
Encapsulates the joint
Why do muscles need to come in antagonistic pairs?
One muscles contracts and moves the joint in one direction whilst the other muscle relaxes
When the second muscle contracts the joint moves in the opposite direction.
