Neurology Flashcards
What is the central nervous system?
Brain
Spinal Cord;
Oligodendrocytes (Provide support to CNS)
What is the peripheral nervous system?
Nerves
Ganglia (Group of nerve cells);
Schwann Cells (Support neurons)
What is the autonomic nervous system?
Division of PNS that influences the function of internal organs.
What is the somatic nervous system?
Moving you muscles
What is the parasympathetic system?
- Stimulation of rest and digest
- Activities that occur when body is at rest: after eating, sexual arousal, salivation, lacrimation (tears), urination, digestion and defecation.
How does parasympathetic system behave?
*"Dumbbels": D=diarrhea U=urination M=miosis (constriction of pupil) B=bradycardia B=bronchoconstrict E=erection L=lacrimation S=salivation
What is the sympathetic system?
Fight or Flight
How does the sympathetic system behave?
*Opposite of Parasympathetics: Constipation Urinary Retention Mydriasis (dilation of pupil) Tachycardia Bronchodilate Ejaculation Xerophthalmia (dry eyes) Xerostomia (dry mouth)
What is Cushing’s triad?
HTN (hypertension)
Bradycardia
Irregular breathing (apnea)
What is Budd-Chiari?
Hepatic vein obstruction
What is Arnold-Chiari?
Foramen magnum obstruction
What is Anencephaly?
- Absence of major portion of brain, skull and scalp
* Notochord not have contact with brain and only have medulla
