Neurologic System Flashcards
Cerebral
Related to conscious thought area of the brain
Somatic
Works with conscious control in the nervous system
Cerebrospinal
Related to balance center of the brain
Autonomic
Part of nervous system related to involuntary control
Lumbosacral
- Region between lumbar and sacral vertebrae.
- This is where neurons enter/exit the spinal cord.
Intervertebral
Space between vertebrae
Sympathetic & Parasympathetic
- Two branches of autonomic nervous system
- Sympathetic: Fight or flight
- Parasympathetic: Rest and digest
Epidural
Upon the meninges
Afferent
Toward the target regarding CNS
Efferent
Away from CNS
Synapse
Space between a nerve/body target where electricity is converted into chemicals for nerve signals to be activated
Blood-Brain Barrier
-System of tight capillaries & guarding oligodendrocytes that protect CNS from everyday garbage
- protection/barrier for the brain/stem & spinal cord
Neuron
Functional unit of nervous system
Neurotransmitter
Chemical in synapse between terminal bulbs of neuron & receptor
Myelin
Special material wrapped around certain nerves to help them work faster
Neuroglial Cell
Family of cells that are supportive of nerve tissue/neuron function
Myotatic Reflex
The contraction of a muscle in response to its passive stretching
Ventricle (of the brain)
4 ventricles that include 2 lateral ventricles (1 in each cerebral hemisphere), the third ventricle in the diencephalon, and the fourth ventricle in the hindbrain
Pia matter
“Soft mother”
The meningeal layer that is highly vascular and lies closest to the brain and spinal cord
