Endocrine System Flashcards
Adrenergic
Related to the adrenal gland
Antidiuretic
Decreased production of urine, controls blood pressure
Endogenous
Produce within or contained within
Exogenous
Produce or contained outside, without
Endocrinopathy
Abnormality within the endocrine system
Etiology
Cause of
Gluconeogenesis
Production of glucose by the liver
Hyperadrenocorticism
Over production of hormone product by the adrenal gland
Adenohypophysis
Responsible for ACTH, FSH, GH, LH, TSH, & PRL
- “a gland below growth”
Neurohypophysis
Responsible for ADH and OT
Negative Feedback Loop
Prevents the overproduction of a hormone
Hypothalamus
- Specific structure in the brain that gives direction to the pituitary.
- Makes oxytocin and antidiuretic hormones.
Hypothyroidism
Under production of the hormone by the thyroid
Hyperthyroidism
Over production of the hormone by the thyroid
Somatotropic
Attraction to the tissues of the body
Sympathomimetic
Any chemical/process that mimics the sympathetic nervous system
Gonadotropic
Attraction to the reproductive tissue
Hyperglycemia
Above normal amounts of glucose in the blood
Hypoglycemia
Below normal amounts of glucose in the blood
Vasopressin
Another term for antidiuretic hormone
- “Vessel pressure (hormone)”
