Neurologic Function Flashcards
1
Q
Function of the nervous system
A
Controls all motor, sensory, autonomic, cognitive and behavioral activities
2
Q
Structures of the neurologic system
A
- Central nervous system
- peripheral nervous system
- basic functional unit-neuron
3
Q
The CNS consists of?
A
The brain and spinal cord
4
Q
The PNS consists of?
A
- includes cranial and spinal nerves
- autonomic and somatic systems
5
Q
Neurotransmitters
A
- communicate messages from one neuron to another, or to a specific target tissue
- can potentiate, terminate, or modulate a specific action or can excite or inhibit a target cell
- many neurologic disorders are caused by an imbalance in neurotransmitters
6
Q
Autonomic nervous system
A
- regulates activities of internal organs, maintains and restores homeostasis
- sympathetic nervous system
- parasympathetic nervous system
- regulated by centers in the spinal cord, brainstem, and hypothalamus
7
Q
Sympathetic nervous system
A
- “fight or flight”
- main neurotransmitter is norepinephrine
8
Q
Parasympathetic nervous system
A
Controls mostly visceral functions
