neurogenic shock Flashcards
what is neurogenic shock
-hypo-perfusion (volume is adequate, hypo-perfusion from excessive dilation)
what causes neurogenic shock
loss of sympathetic control of vessels (sympathetic area of brain damaged/impacted)
etiology (causes) of neurogenic shock
- CNS trauma
- Hypoxia – not ATP
- hypoglycemia– no glucose cannot function
- generalized anesthetic
patho of neurogenic shock
-vasomotor center defect causing sympathetic ouput impaired causing loss of vessel tone which causes vasodilation causing hypoperfusion
Mnfts of nuerogenic shock
- hypotension
- bradycardia (sympathetic output impaired, sympathetic control of HR & affected, will drop)
- dry & warm skin (block in sympathetic output blocks sympathetic nervous system from causing perspiration)
treatment of neurogenic shock
-RESTORE SYMPATHETIC NERVOUS SYSTEM CONTROL
for treatment before that:
- positive inotrope to increase contraction of heart (increase cardiac output causing more perfusion)
-administer IV fluids to increase blood volume
-administer ADH to increase blood volume, ADH reabsorbs water
