Infectious endocarditis Flashcards
1
Q
Infectious endocarditis is usually due to
A
bacterial infection (staphylococcal infections are leading cause)
2
Q
What is infectious endocarditis?
A
- bacterial infection of endocardium & valves causing inflammation
- Causing inflm of endocardium (most internal layer of muscle tissue) & valves
3
Q
what are the requirements for infectious endocarditis to develop?
A
- Bacteria must enter & survive in cardiovascular system (through dental/ medical procedure, IV drug users)
- need adherence to surface eg. defective valves, heart surgery, sutures
4
Q
bacteria colonize in the
A
fibrin strands
5
Q
Mnfts of infectious endocarditis
A
- those of local & systemic infection
- impaired valve function, causing impaired heart function
- murmur
- distal embolization is a potential complication
6
Q
Diagnosing infectious endocarditis
A
(difficult)
- History
- C&S of blood & labs (WBC, CRP, blood cultures)
- echo
7
Q
treatment
A
- antibiotics
- be aware of cardiac complications, avoid & deal with
