Neurodevelopmental Disorders Flashcards
Classification of mental disorders with associated criteria designed to facilitate more reliable diagnosis
DSM-5
Group of conditions with onset early in development, before child enters grade school
Neurodevelopmental disorders
mental retardation
intellectual disability
intellectual disability is also called
intellectual developmental disorder
characterized by deficits in general mental abilities, such as reasoning, problem solving, planning, abstract thinking, judgement, academic learning and learning from experience
intellectual disability
results in impaired adaptive functioning, such that he fails to meet standards of personal independence and social responsibility
intellectual disability
diagnostic criteria of intellectual disability (3)
deficits in intellectual functions
deficits in adaptive function
developmental period
2 causes of intellectual disability
genetic and acquired
This diagnosis is reserved for individuals under the age of 5 when the clinical severity level cannot be reliably assessed during early childhood
Global developmental delay
This category is daignosed when an individual fails to meet expected developmental milestones in several areas of intellectual functioning, and applies to individuals who are unable to undergo systematic assessments of intellectual functioning, including children who are too young to participate in standardized testing
Global developmental delay
4 communication disorders
language
speech sound
social
childhood onset fluency (stuttering)
Disturbance of the normal fluency and motor production speech, including repetitive sounds or syllables, prolongation of consonants or vowel sound, broken words, blocking or words produced with excess physical tension.
childhood onset fluency disorder or stuttering
Persistent deficits in social communication and interaction of autism
socioemotional reciprocity
nonverbal communicative behaviors
developing, maintaining and understanding rs
Restricted repetitive patterns of autism
stereotyped repetitive movements
insistence on sameness
highly restricted, fixated interests
hyper/hyporeactivity to sensory input
symptoms of autism typically recognized at what age
12-24 months of age
risk factors of autism spectrum disorder
environemntal
genetic
Functional consequences of autism spectrum disorder
rigid routine
interference with ADL
Difficult planning and organizing
Poor academic achievements
Difficulty establishing independence
difficulty gaining employment
ADHD
attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder
impairing levels of inattention, disorganization, and/or hyperactivity and impulsivity
ADHD
inability to stay on task, seeming to not listen, and losing materials, at levels that are inconsistent with age or development
ADHD
inattention and hyperactivity have persisted for at least how many months to diagnose ADHD
6
several inattentive or hyperactive impulsive symptoms were present with pts with ADHD prior to age
12
during —- ADHD manifests as hyperactivity
preschool
Risk factors for ADHD
Temperamental
Environmental - <1500g
Genetic and physiological
Neurodevelopmental Motor disorders (3)
developmental coordination disorder
stereotypic movement disorder
tic disorder
deficits in acquisition and execution of coordinated motor skills
developmental coordination disorder
clumsiness and slowness or inaccuracy of performance of motor skills that cause interference with ADLs
developmental coordination disorder
repetitive, seemingly driven, and apparantly purposeless motor behaviors such as hand flapping, body rocking, head banging, self biting or hitting
stereotypic movement disorder
sudden, rapid, recurrent, nonrhythmic, stereotyped motor movements or vocalizations
tics
Both multiple motor and one or more vocal tics
tics may wax and wane in frequency but have persistend for more than a year since first tic
onset before 18
tourette’s disorder
single or multiple motor or vocal tics
tics may wax and wane in frequency but have persisted for more than a year since first tic
onset before 18
persistent (chronic) motor or vocal tic disorder
tic disorder is more common in
males
onset of tic
4-6 yrs old
peak severity of tic
10-12 yo
