Neuro-ophthalmic Flashcards
What is Raeder’s paratrigeminal neuralgia?
A severe unilateral headache with periocular pain that follows the first distribution of the trigeminal nerve
Patients may also present with ipsilateral Horner’s syndrome. Symptoms may last from hours to weeks and will eventually resolve spontaneously.
What characterizes Ice-pick syndrome?
Multifocal, sharp, quick, intense pains around the skull, face, and eyes
The pain does not follow the anatomical distribution of the trigeminal nerve.
What age group is most affected by ophthalmoplegic migraines?
Patients under the age of 10
Characterized by recurrent, transient third nerve palsy that develops after the headache.
Describe the typical characteristics of cluster headaches.
Unilateral, oculotemporal location, deep, sharp, excruciating pain lasting 10 minutes to 2 hours
These headaches typically occur daily for several weeks, hence the name ‘cluster.’
What is the most common type of primary headache in adults?
Tension headaches
Pain usually radiates from the lower back of the head, the neck, or the eyes, and is commonly bilateral.
Fill in the blank: Tension headaches are usually _______ and can range from mild to severe.
bilateral
True or False: Pain in Ice-pick syndrome follows the anatomical distribution of the trigeminal nerve.
False
How long can symptoms of Raeder’s paratrigeminal neuralgia last?
From hours to weeks
What type of pain is associated with cluster headaches?
Deep, sharp, excruciating pain
Fill in the blank: Cluster headaches typically occur on a _______ basis for a period of several weeks.
daily
