Neuro & Integument Flashcards
What is included in Quick Neuro check?
- LOC
- Orientation
- Communication
- Motor Response
What state is described as may be awake but not fully attentive?
Lethargic
What state is described as sleeping all the time, one word answers or mumbling?
Obtunded
What state is described as spontaneously unconscious, vocalization limited to groan or mumble?
Stupor
What state is described as reflexive movement only but no deliberate or purposeful movement?
Coma
Arrector pili
muscle around hair follicle that contract to create goosebumps
Vellus hair
fine, faint hair that covers most of the body
Terminal hair
darker and thicker hair on scalp, eyebrows, axillae, pubic area
Sebaceous gland
produces sebum - a protective liquid substance used to lubricate skin and hair and prevents water loss
Eccrine glands
sweat gland, saline solution - sweat
Aprocrine gland
produces thick, milky secretion and open into hair follicles
causes body odor
What are some functions of the skin?
- protection
- prevention of penetration
- perception (sensory function)
- temperature regulation
- identification
- communication (blushing, pale)
- wound repair
- absorption and excretion of metabolic waste
- production of vit D
Lanugo
fine hairs that cover infants at birth
Vernix
white, lipidy substance made of sebum and epithelial cells, protects skin in utero
Milia
tiny bumps seen in newborns
Linea nigra
dark brown line down the abdomen in pregnant people, caused by hormones
Cholasma
hyperpigmentation on face - common in pregnant persons
Striae gravidarum
stretch marks
How does skin change with old age?
- decreased elasticity
- dry, winkles
- decreased subcutaneous fat and muscle tone
- decrease melanoctyes (causing white hairs)
- hair distribution changes
Edema - mild pitting, slight indentation, no perceptible swelling
1+
Edema - moderate pitting, indentation subsides rapidly
2+
Edema - deep pitting, indentation remains for a short time, limb looks swollen
3+
Edema - very deep pitting, indentation lasts a long time
4+
ABCDE of pigmented lesions
Asymmetry Border irregularity Colour variation Diameter greater than 6 mm Elevation and evolution
Annular
circular (ringworm)
confluent
growing into one another, merge together
discrete
on it’s own (acne)
grouped
clustered but not growing into each other
gyrate
twisted, coiled, snake-like
parasitic skin infection
target
ring with target centre (lyme disease)
linear
in a line, a stratch
polycyclic
annular region that begin to grow together (psoriasis)
zosteriform
linear arrangement along a nerve route
macule
solely colour change, flat, less than 1 cm
patch
macules greater than 1 cm
papule
elevated, thickening epidermis, less than 1 cm (mole)

papules that coalesce to form surface elevation, greater than 1 cm (psoriasis)
nodule
solid, elevated, into the dermis, less than 1cm
tumour
extends into dermis, greater than 1 cm
wheal
raised, transient, irregular shaped because of edema (mosquito bite)
urticaria
wheals that come together, pruritic (hives)
vesicle
blister elevated cavity containing fluid, up to 1 cm (shingles)
bulla
single-chambered, epidermis, greater than 1 cm (burn, blister)
cyst
encapsulated fluid filled cavity in dermis
pustule
cavity filled with pus, elevated (acne)
crust
thickened, dried out exudate
scale
desiccated (dried out) flakes of skin
fissure
any crack in skin
erosion
shallow depression, epidermis lost
ulcer
deep depression into dermis, irregular shape, leaves scar
excoriation
self inflicted abrasion
scar
connective tissue replacing normal tissue after repair
atrophic scar
depression of skin due to loss of tissue (striae)
lichenification
thickening of skin, packed sets of papules
keloid
hypertrophic scar, excess scar tissue
hemangioma
large, flat patch, reddish or bluish
caused by a benign increase in blood vessels in dermis
port-wine stain
usually covering scalp or face, formed from mature capillaries
strawberry mark
raised, bright red area about 2-3 cm
cavernous hemangioma
reddish blue, irregularly shaped, spongy mass of vessels
telangiectases
appearance of blood vessels on skin surface, vascular dilatation
spider or star angioma
red, star-shaped marking with solid circular centre
venous lake
blue-purple dilatation of venules and capillaries
purpuric petechiae
tiny punctate hemorrhages, 1-3mm, round and discrete
purpura
extensive patch of confluent petechiae, greater than 3mm,
blood leak from capillaries
