Define epilepsy
Repeated seizures without an obvious acute symptomatic cause
What is the criteria for a febrile seizure?
- age 3mo-6 yrs
- fever greater than 38.8
- not a CNS infection
What is the most common cause of a febrile seizure?
acute respiratory illness
True or false: febrile seizures typically lead to recurrent unprovoked seizures (epilepsy)
False! Generally, this rarely occurs (1-3%)
How do you treat hydrocephalus?
almost always requires surgery
What are the two most common types of pediatric headaches?
tension and migraine
This is the only medication approved for peds migraines
almotriptan
this type of headache is NOT associated with nausea and vomiting
tension; but could have photophobia or phonophobia but not both (as seen in migraines)
what are some headache warning signs?
unexplained fever, abnormal neuro exam, posterior HA, HA worse with position changes or straining, HA in a young child
