neuro Flashcards
what are seizures, what can cause
uncontrolled discharge of neurons
acidosis-hypoglycemia, hypoxia, H20, withdrawal
what happens to area of brain where siezure occurs
gliosis, scarring, =^seizures
Generalized seizures
whole brain, bilateral, lose consciousness, absence staring spells in kids
Partial seizures
focal specific region, may be confined to one area, aura present
Complete spinal cord injury
complete loss of function/sense below lesion
Spinal shock
cord below dont work (musculoskeletal, bowel, bladder)
autonomic dysreflexia
Neurogenic shock & treatment
T5 or above, vadodilation, hypotension, BRADYCARDIA, pooling
give pressors and fluids to maintain bp, atropine=^CO
central cord syndrom
cervical region, motor weakness and sensory loss in BOTH upper and lower extremities
Anterior cord syndrome
motor paralysis and loss of pain/temp sense BELOW injury
Posterior cord syndrome
damage/compression to spinal artery= loss of proprioception
Conus medullaris syndrome and cauda equina
damage to lowest of cord, sacral nerves, flaccid paralysis of lower limbs, flaccid bowel and bladder
Thrombotic stroke
most commone (htn/dm), clot in narrowed lumen, preceded by tias, less serious if collateral circulation
Embolic stroke
2nd most common, asspciated w MI, Afib, endocarditis, headache on side of embolus, RAPID= no colateral circ
Hemorrhagic
common w htn, no prodromal symptoms,
Completed stroke if
unchanged over 2-3 days
