Splits into 2 roots immediately:

  • Cranial root (from medulla, joins vagus n.)
  • Spinal root (from upper spinal cord segments C1-5; innervates trap/SCM)

exits vis jugular foramen

pure motor

Damage: winging of scapula, shoulder pain, inability to raise arm above shoulder level

Damage: weakened pull-ups, inability to adduct, extend, or internally rotation arm

sensory nerve
supplies posterolateral distal 1/3 of leg, lateral surface of foot/heel/ankle
Courses along short saphenous vein in distal calf
