Q

Definition of Nervous System:

A

The system in the body that is made of the: Brain, brain stem, spinal cord, nerves, ganglia and parts of the receptor organs. Receives and interprets stimuli from: -The environment and/or body -Transmits impulses to the body -muscles, organs, glands, other nerves

Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) *All of these are composed of primarily one type of cell*

A

A. Peripheral Nerves 1. somatic a. cranial nerves b. spinal nerves 2. autonomic *Neuron*

Q
  1. Nerve: 2. Neuron: 3. Neuron composed of:
  2. Nuclei
A
  1. group of multiple neurons 2. Single nerve cell that acts as a conduit to conduct a signal or impulse in ONLY one direction 3. Cell body, Dendrites (many), Axon(1)
  2. collection of neuronal cell bodies found deep with the brain.

Q

Physiological (consists of 3):

A
  1. Afferent neuron: conducts as impulse toward the CNS >> Also called sensory neurons (most of the time sensory) 2. Efferent neuron: conducts an impulse away from CNS. >> Also called Motor Neuron (not all are called motor neurons but most) 3. Interneuron: conduct impulses between other neurons >> found only in the Brain and Spinal cord (Only found in CNS)

Q

Bipolar: Where is it found: Examples:

A

two extensions from the cell body -one from each end >one is the axon, the other is the dendrite >> Eyes, Nose, ears..Afferent, sensory >>> sight, smell, taste, hearing, equilibrium

Q

Unipolar: Where is it found: Examples:

A

aka: pseudo unipolar -one extension from the cell body **extension divides into 2 branches, one of the branches is associated with dendrites** >> sensory neurons: temp, touch, pain…integumentary system.

Q

Multipolar: Where is it found:

A

many extensions from the cell body. -only one is an axon >found everywhere ** every motor neuron is multipolar, single axon with multiple branches

Q

Nervous system functions: The form of the signal the Nervous system uses is?

A
  1. gather information 2. transport the information 3. interpret the information *must be in a form the body can transport and then read. >Action potential

Q

Action potential also called: Described as: Generated by:

A
  • a nerve impulse or nerve signal - Wave of electrochemical activity (allows a neuron to carry a signal over a distance) -the diffusion of specific ions (ionic chemical activity) in and out of the neuron
