Q

what is shared decision making?

when is SDM appropriate

A

SDM = process of bringing evidence into the consultation and incorpotating it into a discussion about the patient’s values and preferences.

most patients overestimate the benefit and underestimate the risk.

‘How do you feel about being involved in making decisions about this issue

One suggestion for managing this is to respond supportively by saying: ‘I’m happy to share my views and help you get to the best decision for you. But before I do that, how about I describe the options in detail, so that you understand them better and can imagine how they might affect you?

1) evidence does not strongly support a single superior option (most clinical decisions)
2) preference-sensitive decision is involved,
