Networking Hardware Devices 2.2 Flashcards
What is a NIC
NIC (Network Interface Card) it allows for computers to be able to connect to the LAN every computer needs it.
Types of Networks cards
Wirless,WAN,Ethernet
Options
single port,multi port, fiber optic
Whats a Repeater
A repeater takes WIFI signal and regenerate, resend, extend this connection
Common uses
Boost copper of fiber connection
convert one network media to another
extend wirless network reach
Multi-Port Repeater
HUB is used as a multiport to connect multiple devices together information that is sent through one interface/ ethernet port is automatically repeated to every other port
everything is Half Duplex do to repeating funtionality to avoid data collision
runs at 10megabits/100megabits
not as efficiant as network speed increases
In the earlier day some would use a hub to connect all of their devices how would you conect multiple HUB networks to other devices
Bridges
- make decision makes decison what traffic will be forward based on the destination MAC address on the ethernet Frame.
- it did not broadcast traffic to everyone its smarter then a HUB
What is a switch and its functionallity
it is a newer and improved technology called Switches it can support hundreds of devices and forwarding decisions by looking at the MAC address
some switches has the ability to function as a
Switch- Routing packets based on MAC address
Router- Routing Packets based on destination IP address
2 types of switches
- Unmanaged
- used for basic functionality, little configuration, noVLANS
what is a Router and what does it do
- Router
A Router is used to connect a computer to the LAMN
Makes Routing deicison based on the IP Address
What is a WAP
WAP known as Wireless Access Point
In computer networking, a wireless access point (WAP), or more generally just access point (AP), is a networking hardware device that allows other Wi-Fi devices to connect to a wired network.
What is a Firewall
- A Firewall is a network Security Systems that monitors and controls incoming and outgoing
- network traffic based on pre-determined secuirty rules. setting a barier between trusted and untrusted Network
What is a Cable Modem
- Cable Modem allows you to connect to a broadbamnd Network provided by a cable television
- Sends data on the “Cable” Network by using somthing called DOCSIS(Data Over Cable Service Interface Specification)
- Due to DOCSIS it allows Multipe Serrvice such as Data, Voice and Video
What does ADSL mean
ADSL means Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line it uses a Standard telephone line which enables faster Transmission then the common Network Line
What is a Patch Panels
A Patch Panels Allows for Computers to connect to a LAN on a large scale by connecting it with an RJ45 connector first terminating the cable into the Patch Panel
What is a POE and POE+
A POE(Power Over Ethernet)
uses an RJ11 phone cable which allows you to power devices using ethernet cable
POE
- uses 802.3af
- Max Watt 15.4
POE+
- uses 802.3at
- MaxWatt 30
What is Ethernet over Power(EOP)
Reverse of POE instead this cable extends ethernet network using an ethernet cable
