network security Flashcards
access control
determines the facilities a user has access to
what sort of facilities does the access control determine the use of?
- software
- internet
- documemts and data
- the ability to install and/or remove software
- the ability to maintain other users’ accounts
give an example of when access control would be needed
an office worker might need access to productivity software, email and the internet but not to install software or access to other users’ accounts. Restriction limits the actions a user can take, reducing the potential threats
what is a firewall?
tool that monitors traffic going into and out of a computer or network
what is the firewall policy?
the decision to allow or block traffic e.g. email transmissions that are not sent from, or to, known and allowed sources are blocked
which is more expensive? Hardware based or software based firewalls?
hardware
physical security
restricting physical access to important parts of a network e.g. authorised people such as network managers can access servers
what is cloud computing?
using servers connected to the internet to run applications or store data
name 3 advantages of cloud computing
data can easily be accessed from anywhere with an internet connection
the business running the cloud computing sevice manages backups and security
additional storage can be added easily without having to invest in additional hardware
name 3 disadvantages of cloud security
data breaches
easier for hackers to access one system from another
virtualisation needs to be managed
