Network Overview Flashcards
What do networks do for us?
Connect networks together, allows us to access network services, converge traffic, etc.
What is a client?
Workstation or other end use device that provides a user with access to the network.
Could be a PC, laptop, VolP Phone, wireless tablet, smartphone, teleconferencing endpoint, or even a television etc.
Uses the services of another computer or the shared resources of a network server
What is a Server?
A computer that shares its resources, such as files and printers, with other computers on the network.
Could be a network file system server, an E-mail server, print server, domain server, phone system server, or a server for hosting websites such as a web server.
Can be local to the network or remote
What is a Switch/Hub?
The primary purpose of both Hubs and Switches is to provide wired access to the LAN.
Hubs are older technology and have been replaced by switches.
Switches are intelligent and know which devices are connected to them by learning the MAC address of each device.
Switches send traffic only to the destination MAC address whereas Hubs flood the entire network. In this way switches provide much more efficiency and better utilization of the network.
Switches provide many other benefits such as loop avoidance
Why are switches better than hubs?
Switches are intelligent and know which devices are connected to them by learning the MAC address of each device.
Switches send traffic only to the destination MAC address whereas Hubs flood the entire network. In this way switches provide much more efficiency and better utilization of the network.
What is WAP?
A Wireless Access Point connects wireless network nodes to wireless or wired networks.
What do WAPs look like at a corporate level?
Many commercial grade WAPs are specifically for wireless access only.
What do WAPs look like at a corporate level?
Many consumer grade WAPs and some commercial grade WAPs are combination devices that also act as a switch and router all rolled into one.
What is Network Media?
What physically connects a device into the network.
Can network media be wireless?
Yes.
What is an example of wireless media?
Radiowaves
What is an example of wired media?
Cables such as Fiber Optic cables or Copper Cables
True or false? Both wired and wireless media have many different standards associated with them.
True.
What are examples of different standards of network media?
Distance limitations and bandwidth/speed capacities.
What is a router?
A device that connects separate networks.
What is the gateway to leave a LAN?
A router.
How do routers work?
Routers Intelligently forward packets from one network to another based on the network address such as the Internet Protocol (IP) address.
What is a LAN?
Local Area Network is a network in the same geographic location.
What is a WAN?
Wide Area Network is a network that connects two geographically separated locations.
How do WANs work?
WAN connections provide access from the internal network to external or remote networks.
Are WANs faster or slower than LANs? Why?
WAN connections are typically lower speed/bandwidth than LANs due to the long distances of WANs.
