Ethernet Segmentation Flashcards
Connection between network devices on a shared medium is a what?
Ethernet Segment
What’s a Collision?
When frames on the same shared medium collide.
Collision domain?
An ethernet segment, a shared piece of wire.
What happens on a collision domain as more devices are added?
Frames are more and more likely to collide. A collision is more likely to happen.
What device resolves collision domains and how?
Switches, because every port on the switch is its own collision domain.
Other than a switch, what can also separate collision domains?
Routers.
CSMA/CD?
Carrier Sense Multiple Access with Collision Detection was used to prevent collisions but since we now have switches that separate collision domains, this is no longer used.
How does CSMA/CD work?
Each nodes listens to the wire and only transmit when there is no signal on the wire.
What happens when a collision happens with CSMA/CD enabled?
If a collision occurs a retransmit signal is sent.
Half Duplex?
node can listen or talk (not both at the same time)
1 Gbps @ Full Duplex = how much throughput?
2 Gbps
Full Duplex
Node can listen and talk at the same time
1 Gbps @ Half Duplex = how much throughput?
1 Gbps
Duplex mismatch?
Nodes that use different duplex and settings.
What happens if there is a duplex mismatch.
This will likely cause errors on a connection.
T/F. Autosense correctly senses the duplex and speed of other nodes.
False. Its not a perfect system.
