Nervous Tissue Flashcards
Where are Unipolar or Pseudounipolar neurons located?
Dorsal root ganglia of the spinal nerves
Sensory ganglia of the cranial nerves
Where are bipolar neurons located?
Cochlear and vestibular ganglia
Retina
Olfactory epithelium
Where are multipolar neurons located?
Cells of the cerebral cortex
Anterior horn of the spinal nerve
What are astrocytes?
Star-shaped cells
Largest and numerous glial cells
What are the functions of astrocytes?
Axon guidance and synaptic support
Control of the blood-brain barrier and blood flow
Formation of Glial scars in damaged areas
Somehow related to potassium
Types of Astrocytes?
Protoplasmic astrocytes
Fibrous Astrocytes
Where are Protoplasmic astrocytes found?
The gray matter of the brain and spinal cord
Where are Fibrous astrocytes found?
The white matter of the brain and spinal cord
What are oligodendrocytes?
Oligodendrocytes are a type of large glial cell found in the central nervous system. Oligodendrocytes produce the myelin sheath insulating the neuronal axon.
Types of oligodendrocytes
Intrafascicular (Myelination)
Perineuronal (Support neurons)
What are microglia?
The specialized population of macrophages that are found in the central nervous system (CNS)
What are ependymal cells?
Forms epithelium like the lining of ventricles of the brain & central canal of the spinal cord
What are glioblast cells?
Stem cells
What are the neuroglial cells in PNS?
Schwann cells
Satellite cells
Difference between Gray and White matter?
Gray matter has mainly cell bodies
White matter has unmyelinated and myelinated nerve fibres (White due to myelinated fibres)
