Nervous system - Spinal Cord Flashcards
What are descending tracts?
The pathway by which motor signals are sent from the brain to the spinal cord
What are the 5 nerve root groups called?
Cervical Thoracic Lumbar Sacral Coccygeal
What are the layers that protect the brain and spinal cord?
Three layers of the meninges
What is the inner layer of the meninges?
Pia meter
What is the middle layer of the meninges?
The arachnoid, a web-like structure filled with fluid to cushion the brain
What is the outer layer of the meninges?
The dura meter
How long is the spinal cord?
0.4-0.5m
What is the function of the spinal cord?
Transmit signals between the brain and the body
Where does the spinal cord run between?
From the medulla oblongata to approximately the C1 and L2 vertebrae
What is gray matter?
Grey matter refers to unmyelinated neurons and other cells of the central nervous system
What is white matter?
Nerve fibres are surrounded by a myelin sheath which gives the white matter its colour
What is the path of the spinal fluid?
Choroid plexus -> lateral ventricle -> 3rd ventricle -> 4th ventricle -> sub arachnoid space or central canal of spinal cord
Function of cerebro spinal fluid?
Acts like a cushion against injury to the brain or spinal cord. Removes waste products from the brain and helps your CNS work properly
