Nervous system - Cranial Nerves Flashcards
What are cranial nerves?
Nerves that originate from the brain or brainstem
How many cranial nerves are there?
12
What do cranial nerves do?
Relay information to and from the body to the brain
What is this cranial nerve?

Olfaction (sensory) nerve (CNI)
What is this cranial nerve?

Optic (sensory) nerve (CNII)
What is this cranial nerve?

Oculomotor nerve (CNIII)
What is this cranial nerve?

Trochlear (motor) nerve (CNIV)
What is this cranial nerve?

Trigeminal (motor and sensory) nerve (CNV)
What is this cranial nerve?

Adducin’s (motor) nerve (CNVI)
What is this cranial nerve?

Facial (sensory and motor) nerve (CNVII)
What is this cranial nerve?

Vestibulocochlear (sensory) nerve (CNVIII)
What is this cranial nerve?

Glossopharyngeal (sensory) nerve (CNIX)
What is this cranial nerve?

Vagus (sensory and motor) nerve (CNX)
What is this cranial nerve?

Accessory (motor) nerve (CNXI)
What is this cranial nerve?

Hypoglossal (motor) nerve (CNXII)
What are the functions of CN1 (Olfactory nerve)?

responsible for smell
What are the functions of CN2 (optic nerve)?

responsible for vision
What are the functions of CN3 (Oculomotor nerve)?

responsible for eye movements
What are the functions of CN4 (trochlear nerve)?

responsible for eye movements
What are the functions of CN5 (Trigeminal nerve)?

responsible for Partial face and tongue sensation and biting
What are the functions of CN6 (Abducens nerve)?

responsible for eye movement
What are the functions of CN7 (Facial nerve)?

responsible for taste, facial expression, saliva and tears
What are the functions of V8 (Vestibulocochlear nerve)?

responsible for balance and hearing
What are the functions of CN11 (Glossopharyngeal nerve)?

responsible for taste, tongue and pharynx sensation, swallowing and saliva
What are the functions of CN10 (Vagus nerve)?

responsible for sensation in throat, larynx and pharynx, as well as mouth movements such as swallowing, speaking, and coughing
What are the functions of CN11 (Accessory nerve)?

responsible for shoulder and head movements
What are the functions of CN12 (Hypoglossal nerve)?
responsible for tongue movement
What are the symptoms of damage to the glossopharyngeal nerve?
- Loss of taste from posterior 1/3 of tongue
- Trouble swallowing
- Decreased sensation at back of tongue, soft palate and pharynx
- diminished gag reflex and tongue and throat pain
What are the symptoms of damage to the vagus nerve?
Hoarseness of voice
Difficulty swallowing and gagging
Abnormal heart rate and GI problems
