Nervous System pt. 1 Flashcards
neurons:
main cells, conducting cells recieves transmits signals
neuroglia
supporting cells of neurons
Excitability:
ability to rspnd to stimuli
COnductivity:
ability to produce electro-chemical signals to other cells
Secretion:
ability to produce & secrete a neurotransmitter
Sensory neurons:
AFFERENT neurons
w/in PNS
detect stimuli light/pressure/heat
transmit signals to CNS
Interneurons:
With in the CNS b.w afferent & efferent neurons
recievbes signals from AFFERENT neurons & determines response
Motor Nuerons:
EFFERENT neurons
w/in the PNS
recieves signals from interneurons & transmits signaals to muscles/vicera
Structure of the Neuron:
Cell Body-SOMA
single-central nucleus
Dentrites
Axon
Axon Hillock
Myelin Sheath
Dedrites:
SHORT extensions of SOMA
recieves signals from other cells & brings to nerve body
Axon:
nerve fiber
SINGLE LONG extension of cell boy
transmits signals to other cells w/ electric signals
Axon Hillock:
The origin of the AXON from the SOMA
generate action potential
Myelin Sheath:
white-fatty covering of the AXON
insulates signal conduction along the AXON for speed
Node of Ranvier:
small unmyelied GAPS Axon
Terminal Branches:
axon terminals
end of the axon that makes contact with other cells
